Gatlinburg is one of the few cities which maintain its culture and heritage. It was called “land of paradise” by Mr. William Ogle who built the ‘Ogle’s cabin’ some 200 years back. Today’s name of Gatlinburg is derived from the name of a shopkeeper who settled here called Radford.C.Gatlin.

Until 1912 education was paid by the parents which were in the subscription form. After 1912 a public settlement school was opened. In 1921 the Ogle’s farm was sold and converted it into school and hospital.

One of the major wars fought at the Gatlinburg was the “Battle of Burg Hill”. The town suffered hardship and deprivation due to the war.

The Smoky Mountains was affectionately called the’schonage’ or ‘the place of blue smoke’. In 1923 the National Park by Mr. and Mrs. Willis.P.Daves of Knoxville. In 1940 the then American President Franklin Roosevelt dedicated the park to the public.

In 1937 the Great Smoky Mountain Arts and Craft Community was established. It now comprises more than 120 artists and craftsmen along the 8 mile loop. It provide you with various handmade candles, quilts, potteries, painting and traditional broom making maintaining the city’s culture and heritage. While shopping you can also appreciate candy making and satisfy your appetite. You will also be able see the demonstrations of candle making with various colors of wax and wicks.

The first Baptist Church was built in 1875 at the corner of the Parkways and the Baskins Creek Road. Later in 1991 it was shifted to the Highway 321, east downtown.
