
Chattanooga History
Chattanooga has a long and checkered history. He Cherokee American Naive tribe formed the earliest inhabitants in this region. The French traders were the first to recognize the importance of Chattanooga and establish trading posts all along the Tennessee river during the 1600s. Two centuries later, the area came to be officially settled as Ross’s landing while the Cherokee and the French were gone. It was only in 1838 that Chattanooga was officially christened. Chattanooga means “rock rising to a point” which in turn describes the Lookout Mountain aptly. The Civil war saw significant battles being fought on the soils of Chattanooga.

The now famous Choo Choo rail terminal station came into existence in 1908 and continues as a major attraction and a testament of the railroad’s golden age. Chattanooga went through a series of ups and downs during the 19th century and by 1980 the situation had turned from bad to worse. Deteriorating city infrastructure, serious challenges on socio economic front, job layoffs, and racial tensions plagued the city. But, these are the past history and should not deter your from Chattanooga Tennessee travel.
The 21st century however ushered in new hope for Chattanooga with government and private resources getting invested to repair the tarnished image of the city and go through a metamorphosis of its water front and downtown areas. The redevelopment of the waterfront involved $120 million and the effort appears to have paid off. In more recent times, Chattanooga receives over 1 million visitors annually demonstrating the success of its efforts at not just rebuilding its image but also becoming a city that people want to live in and do business. Today, Chattanooga is home for the Coca Cola’s first bottling company, and other industry majors like BASF, Alstom, and DuPont to name just a few. When you travel to Chattanooga, it is not just a scenic city but has successfully positioned itself as a sought-after vacation destination with a series of engaging attractions.
