In the year 1897, the Tennessee General Assembly passed a library law. The law states that 20,000 and more cities can establish and maintain the free public libraries and reading rooms. Nashville's first public library was the Howard Library which was established in the year 1898.

The Library will be opened from Tuesdays through Sundays. From Tuesday to Friday the library hours will be from 9am to 6 pm. The library hour in Saturdays is from 9am to 5 pm. In Sundays the Nashville Public library will be opened from 2pm to 5pm.
