Cheekwood Botanical Gardens and Museum of Art
The origin of Cheekwood can be traced back to the Cheeks who were one of the primary entrepreneurial families of the Nashville region and in turn created the phenomenon of the Maxwell House coffee. The entire process began during the 1880's when Christopher T. Cheek shifted to Nashville and began to run a grocery in the region.
He was assisted by his son Leslie Cheek. In the subsequent years Joel Cheek, a cousin, created a coffee blend that was of unparalleled quality. This coffee blend began to be used by the Maxwell House which was the premier hotel of Nashville. The Cheek-Neal Coffee Company was bought for over $40 million in the year 1928 and using the same money the Cheeks purchased land ranging 100 acres and built a beautiful mansion and formal gardens in the ancient English style on the same.
The creation, known as Cheekwood was developed by Bryant Fleming who was an architect from New York. The grounds were transformed into an art museum and a botanical site in the 1950s and were opened after renovation and development in 1960. For those looking to travel Nashville, Cheekwood is one of the most historically important places to visit.
